Legal 500, the UK-based legal ranking publication, released its 2021 edition with the results of its annual research on Latin American law firms and lawyers. In this version, three lawyers and four areas of practice of Alessandri were highlighted.

• Intellectual Property – Band 2

Alessandri & Compañía Abogados‘ sizeable patent and innovation department has an enviable name in the market for its advice to international and domestic clients on the protection and enforcement of IP assets; clients additionally benefit from the department’s consistent collaboration with the firm’s in-house tax, labour, corporate, contract and litigation teams. • Data Privacy – Band 2

‘Standing out for its commitment‘, Alessandri & Compañía Abogados has fielded a data privacy practice since 2017. The six-strong group is best known for its work involving financial services, while the recent pandemic led to new data processing service-lines involving healthcare, telemedicine, employees’ health data, e-commerce and online education. Additional growth saw practice head and co-chair for AmCham’s Digital Regulations Committee, Macarena Gatica (who ‘always achiev[es] the best results‘), being appointed partner in January 2021; further partner-level support is provided by IP/IT managing partner Rodrigo Velasco A, and Santiago Ortúzar, who handles compliance, unfair competition and IP). • Corporate and M&A – Band 4

The ten-member M&A department at Alessandri & Compañía Abogados consistently advises multinationals and private equity firms on major acquisitions and sales, covering industries such as financial services, construction materials, mining equipment, salmon farming, telecoms, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverages. The practice also advises domestic and foreign companies on their day-to-day transactions and compliance with local regulations. Team leader Fernando Jamarne has longstanding experience in business and financial deals; head of the firm’s insurance, capital markets and competition practices, Felipe Cousiño is also key to the group; and managing partner Arturo Alessandri C‘s wide practice covers foreign investments and M&A. In July 2020, Alessandri & Compañía Abogados absorbed a three-partner tax department, comprising the former founding partners of Gorziglia Morales Cox Abogados, with the practice led by business reorganisation, tax optimisation and compliance specialist Franco Gorziglia; substantial back-up is provided by Francisco Morales Sierra and José Joaquín Cox. The group covers a diverse range of tax matters, including general advice, litigation and procedures before the tax authority; it also has extensive experience in internal and international taxation, application of double taxation conventions, and fiscal, municipal and customs taxes.
