Intellectual Property
The ‘excellent’ Alessandri & Compañía Abogados boosted its practice with the promotion of Loreto Bresky to the partnership. The ‘professional and deeply knowledgeable’ team impresses for its ‘high level of intelligence, determination to get results and good communications skills’ and sources highlight the ‘overall level of service’ as ‘first-class’. Half of the firm’s workforce specialises in IP work and, partly because it ‘has been doing this kind of work for generations’, partly because it houses 17 ‘quality lawyers’, the team is many companies’ ‘first choice in Chile’. In recent years, the firm has seen an increasing flow of contentious work, particularly related to unfair competition matters, and its civil litigation practice is continuing to grow accordingly. In addition to its strong contentious practice, the firm has excellent advisory credentials across the full spread of trade mark, domain name, copyright and patent issues. Work highlights included successfully representing Domino’s IP holder in its trade mark registration, which was opposed by Productos Alimenticios Donuts and eventually authorised by the Chilean Trademark Office and the Intellectual Property Tribunal. On the patent side, the team obtained the revocation of a patent rejection by the Chilean Patent Office for Vericore. Practice head Rodrigo Velasco S and patent director Rodrigo Velasco A are both highly recommended.
Corporate and M&A
Alessandri & Compañía Abogados’ corporate team is led by the highly respected Arturo Alessandri, and the firm handles matters including cross-border M&A transactions, highly specialised due diligence processes, joint ventures, reorganisations and the implementation of business structures. Felipe Cousiño and Fernando Jamarne are both noted for their experience. Jamarne recently advised Metro International on the due diligence and acquisition of 26% of the shares of Cuponatic Chile and Cuponatic Latam in the framework of its expansion process in Latin America. He also assisted Chile Botanics with a capital increase by capital injection from Naturex. Meanwhile, Alessandri helped General Motors with its acquisition of Ally Financial’s Chilean subsidiaries; and Cousiño assisted Värde Partners with its $225m acquisition of FirstCity Financial Corporation.
Insurance
Felipe Cousiño’s team at Alessandri & Compañía Abogados provides insurance, corporate governance and regulatory advice in Chile to local insurers and foreign reinsurers. Recent activity for the group includes advising Euler Hermes Seguros de Crédito on its joint venture process with Mapfre, and defending Chubb Chile in various insurance claims, including a fraud case and a fidelity guarantee insurance claim in relation to the bankruptcy of a stockbroker.
