/ Description

Arturo Alessandri Besa is a leading specialist in the fields of patent protection, utility models and industrial design.

He has been a member of the Chilean Bar Association since 1949, where he was a board member between 1977 and 1978. He was also elected Vice President of the Inter-American Association of Industrial Property (ASIPI) from 1976 until 1979.

In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Alessandri has dedicated many years to public service as member of the Chilean Congress, first as a Member of the Chamber of Deputies (1973) and later as Senator (1990-1998). He ran for president in 1993.

Mr. Alessandri participated in the discussion and enactment of the new Industrial Property Law, which came into effect in 1991 and included the patentability of chemical and pharmaceutical products. He also drafted a bill for the protection of plant varieties that became Law 19,342, simultaneously with the approval of the international treaty sponsored by WIPO, UPOV I.
